This Masjid is a beautiful gem. Located on the main road it is a bold and vibrant converted mini mosque.
I made my way down to this Masjid on a Friday for Jummah, we had initially gone to Leytonstone Mosque [which is a very large mosque in comparison] but it did not have a ladies section. With previous experience of being turned away from a mosque we were told with the same ‘sad/apologetic’ “sorry we have no ladies section”, extremely disappointing considering its size. Nonetheless, please always call or check the website before visiting or planning travel routes, it is honestly better than the sadness of being turned away.
The ladies section at Masjid Tawhid was clearly labelled on the door to left. We were late due to our upsetting tangent; so were greeted with a sea of women sitting on the stairs who were unable to enter the prayer space. We listened to what was left of the Khutba, it was engaging, informative and had a call to action. We ended up praying on the stairs amongst the shoes, I recommend going early if want a space. After the prayer was finished we waited for the crowds to leave before we took a look around. Whilst waiting by the doorway we were greeted with hugs and kisses, the community was very warm, inviting and seemed have strong bonds. Everyone knew everyone and the people were very diverse.
Once entering the space you will see a small room to the right which is the mothers and children room, not in the best of condition, in terms of beautifying the space; more can be done, it was scruffy looking and probably in need of a deep-clean. I was told the wash room and main prayer hall was recently renovated and it was impressive with good clean Wudhu facilities and a fresh new carpet. Unfortunately the main prayer hall is only open on Fridays for Jummah and the small room at the front is what is used during the week.
Also note that if you visit during the week the ladies entrance door will be closed, to gain entrance you must enter through the main entrance and go up the stairs. I have taken a photo of the door you enter from the male entrance with a lovely aunty who modelled for me in front of the door in her colourful scarf.
Overall the facilities of the Masjid are good, but it is disappointing that the main space that is beneath the minaret is not available during the week, our prayer experience was sad but expected considering how late we were. The vibe of the community however was lovely and surpassed any expectations I had. A super inviting and open Masjid.
I don’t know whether it’s just me or if perhaps everyone else experiencing
